Used the "foreign" package. Went back to check. No labels. This may be an R issue with labels, not a translation issue.

Did you use the "foreign" package at the time? The docu cited earlier seems
to imply that labels are properly converted...

I have imported Stata files to R, and I recall that no label information came through.

So have I... Grrr...

A glance at http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/foreign/foreign.pdf
shows
that it can... See the functions "read.dta" and "write.dta"...

What does R do? I thought it could import SAS or Stata files, but I
don't know if it preserves labeling. Also, the price of the program is
right, but there is a cost in learning it. I've tried many times...

If you have SAS 9.2 available, it will import files from Stata v10, and preserve labels. I thought SAS had bought dbms copy to kill it, but it seems that SAS has incorporated parts of it, even though it does not support the stand-alone dbms copy very well.

SPSS reads and writes both Stata and SAS files, preserving labels.

Stat/Transfer, whose website is at

Stata, and can be downloaded from SSC using the -ssc- command. However,
Ben (or somebody) would have to find the money to pay for Stat/Transfer.
I hope this helps.

I know that fdause cannot read SAS labels.

Is there any other way to
transform SAS data into Stata data while preserving labels? I have an
older version of DBMS copy that I could use if necessary.
thanks,
Ben
