st: merge cross-section with time series data

Hi,
I have problems merging two datasets, one is a cross-section, the other time series.
I am using Stata 8 on windows vista.
The time series data contains fund returns, etc. starting 1960 to 2009.
The cross-sections contains data on fund's benchmarks, both in 2008 and 2011, and if there was a change. (so its not really a cross-section?)
The time series contains more funds than the cross-section. of course i want to merge only if the fund is in both data sets. further i want that the variables of the cross-section are filled in all the time points of the time series.
Any help appreciated
Philip
