There seems to be no great mystery here. Kokootsche's mails are
spattered with e-gunk such as "MIME-Version: 1.0". These are tell-tale
signs that he is not sending Plain Text (ASCII) only; or that something
is attached to his mail that triggers MIME encoding.

As Kit said, move to another provider! My research into Statalist issues
uncovered that 43% of Statalisters are on gmail, so there is no reason
for
you not to be :-)
