Dear Statalist,
A new package called 'zipsave' can now be downloaded from the SSC
archives (thanks to Kit Baum for putting it up). To describe and/or
install just type:
ssc describe zipsave
ssc install zipsave
The package automates compression of datasets in zip-format, the
compression format most prevalent on Windows systems. The syntax of
zipsave closely mirrors that of the ordinary save/use commands in Stata.
The commands may help to lower use of disk space and network traffic in
distributed filesystems such as SMB/Cifs.
The package is also tested to work on Linux/Unix when the commands
zip/unzip are available from the command line. As MacOSX is based on
Unix, the package should work there as well.
If you prefer to use gzip for compression, you should have a look at the
'gzsave' package (ssc describe gzsave).
Comments, bug reports, etc. are most welcome.
Best,
Henrik
