In this case, not really. I have a panel dataset where n=12 and t=12, and I need 12 individual graphs put together, just like -xtline- does it. Overlaying does not make sense here. But, after reading your advice,

- scatter strategies period, by(group) -

does the trick. Thanks a lot. I still think that the info in the help file for -xtline- is kind of irritating.
