Precision and sample-size analysis is used to determine the optimal allocation of resources for studies that use confidence intervals (CIs) for inference. For example, you may be trying to balance the sample size allowed by your budget and the one required to obtain your desired level of precision. This precision, measured by the width of the CI, depends on aspects of the study such as the sample size, confidence level, and standard deviation.
With Stata's ciwidth suite, you can explore values of these parameters to ensure that you obtain a CI with a prespecified level of precision in a future study. You can perform precision and sample-size analysis for CIs for a population mean, a population variance, a difference between paired means, or a difference between two independent means.
We show you how to compute sample size, CI width, and probability of CI width in Stata. Find out how this applies to studies with different allocation ratios and how you can perform sensitivity analysis with tables and graphs.
