Theo, Those posts are either wrong or you are mis-interpreting them. You can have more than one data file open in Stata, but you have to open a new instance of Stata each time. Perhaps they were saying that you can't have more than one data file open in a single Stata instance, which is true. Of course, there are also limitations depending on your system memory, but that has nothing (or very little) to do with how many files you can open. If you are still concerned/confused, you should provide links to the posts you referred to.
