This problem can be solved by installing the latest version of -sdecode-
compatible with your Stata version from my website. In the case of
-sdecode- for Stata Version 12 users, the latest version of -sdecode-
compatible with Stata Version 12 can be found by typing, in Stata,
net from "http://www.imperial.ac.uk/nhli/r.newson/stata11/"
and selecting and installing -sdecode-.
Like Richard, I am surprised that this problem does not arise more
often. I personally have always had a policy of distributing versions
of my packages compatible with earlier versions of Stata on my website.
They can usually be located using -findit-. Alternatively, a user can
use a browser and find the latest version of any package from my website at
http://www.imperial.ac.uk/nhli/r.newson/stata.htm#all_versions
and they will see a table of all versions of all my packages, sorted
primarily by package name and secondarily in reverse order of version.
I hope this helps.
Best wishes
Roger

I'm surprised this problem doesn't come up more often with adoupate. It
would be nice if it could check to make sure you aren't installing an
update that now requires a version of Stata you don't have.
Luckily, Roger Newson is very good about keeping old versions of his
programs around for those who still need them. See

Dear users
Recently, with the intention of updating my ado files, I gave -
adoupdate, update -command.
Unfortunately, it seems that the command installed newer versions of
the programs (for Stata 13) than the copy I have (Stata 12).
For example, one .ado updated was - sdecode -.
I discovered the problem when I used this ado the last time when, to
my surprise, the following message appeared:
. sdecode mun, gen(munnome)
this is version 12.1 of Stata; it cannot run version 13.0 programs
You can purchase the latest version of Stata by visiting

I appreciate any help.
