Metaphors, metaphors. I know I started it. What sort of background do some of these people have? If he is a typical struggling economics/econometrics student, it's not that surprising that he has not heard of generalized linear models, which most econometricians would only take seriously if they had invented it themselves. But not to know what a transformation is!
