I am quite sure I'm using a 64 bit machine
Indeed, it would be hard to find a new machine today that is not 64-bit. But when you install Linux (e.g. in my case Ubuntu) you have a choice of installing a 32-bit version or a 64-bit version. Make sure your OS is also 64-bit if you are installing 64-bit Stata 11.
I was able to successfully install Stata 11 on my 32-bit Ubuntu 10.10 OS (running virtually on a 64-bit machine) after using sudo for the install and stinit.
