I am now prompted to run the license installer. Type:
./stinit
I receive the message:
bash: ./stinit: cannot execute binary file
I tried changing the permissions:
sudo chmod -R 755 /usr/local/stata11
Still no dice. Does anyone have any advice?

chmod a+x stinit
./stinit

I just tried this and got the same error message. Then again, as I thought about it, I was trying to install a 64-bit Stata on a 32-bit Linux. Of course stinit will not run if it is a 64-bit executable on a 32-bit machine. This might be your problem.
