Punit,
Stata i particularly good in summarizing financial ratios for both
bankrupt and non-bankrupt firms. So one way or another it is possible
to do what you are asking. However,
#1) you write: "I want to summarize financial ratios for bankrupt and
nonbankrupt firms, say, 5 years prior to their going bankrupt "
What exactly do you want to summarize for non-bankrupt firms? I mean:
how to determine the time period of interest for non-bankrupt firms?
All period? Last 5 years? Last 5 years for which the data are
available?
#2) How is your data organized? What is the unit of observation?
(firm? particular indicator?).
Best, Sergiy Radyakin.

All these firms went bankrupt in different years. How do I summarize this automatically? What stata command would work? I would really appreciate any advice you can offer.
