Thanks Jeff & Gary,

Here's what I discovered. I had to modify the registry manually instead of using tools available prior to Windows 7. as well, I had to modify a this key, which differs from the .dta one:

Key: My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Applications\Stata-64.exe\shell\open\command Value: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Stats\Stata\Stata-64.exe" do "C:\Program Files (x86)\Stats\Stata\john\profile.do" "%1"

As far as I can see the old system of modifying the "open" action of the .dta extension no longer works in Windows 7 64-bit as it did in previous versions. as well, Microssoft removed the native editing of this. One must use a third party program such as Nirsoft's FileTypesMan.

Anyway, works now though it took some doing. Jeff, I'd be curious to know which registry key you had to edit.

My syntax is the same as yours, same platform, and it works fine

For years, I have been able to double-click on a Stata data file, have
it automatically open in Stata, have Stata open in the folder where the
.dta file resides, and run my profile.do file that contains all of my
customizations. This worked up until version 9.2 32-bit running in
Windows 7 64-bit professional. I modified the "open" command for the
file type .DTA as follows:

This works with Stata 9.2 on Windows 7
C:\Progra~2\STATS\STATA\wstata.exe do
c:\progra~2\stats\stata\john\profile.do "%1"

This does not work with Stata 11 64-bit on Windows 7
Action for 'Open' under filetype .dta
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Stats\Stata\Stata-64.exe" do
c:\progra~2\stats\stata\john\profile.do "%1"

Is this stored in a different location on the registry? has something
else changed?

Regards, John
