It is never good practice to work 'live on air' on your data file.
Keep an original datafile, and accumulate commands in a do-file which
build the working datafile - generating new variables, dropping cases
etc.
That way, when things go wrong, you can use the do-file to rebuild
your working data file.
One important reason for doing this is because you need to leave an
audit trail showing how you created your working datafile. It also is
important because you can review the code in the do-file to make sure
that you did exactly what you thought you did.
