Maarten and Martin, or vice versa, have solved this, but one key point
remains worth emphasis.
I think Ronnie meant that it was AS IF his colleague had overlaid the
results of -twoway connected- with the results of -graph bar-.
However, you can't do that in Stata. As the Ms' examples showed, you
need to do it all within -twoway-.
A repeated strategic point is that if you run into a dead wall in -graph
bar- or -graph dot- or -graph box-, you often need to redo the graphing
within -twoway-.
The next Stata Journal for example carries a detailed discussion of how
to do box plots entirely within -twoway-.

I am trying, without much luck, to re-create a chart a colleague has
produced in MS Excel. The data are
quintile total afi rfi
1 1096.83 717.27 .44
2 4045.8 1430.88 .35
3 5741.28 1747.3 .3
4 9429.86 2414.48 .27
5 19040.5 4688.59 .27
What they have done is overlay
-twoway connected rfi quintile- onto -gr bar tot afi, over(quintile)- to
get this

How can I do this in Stata?
