Bottom line: The date of the -program- (2001) need not mean that it does not
use Mata, because it calls other -program-s that have been upgraded to use
mata.
One thing is weird, though: spatreg.ado says "version 7" at the top of its
-program-s. I do not want to reignite the debate about the meaning of the
-version- statement, but it seems weird that it is able to run -mata- stuff
along the way...

Dear Martin and Mark,
thank you for your help and sorry for not being precise enough in my
question.
I used StataSE 10.0 and the -spatreg- from 2001 to run my regressions when I
encountered the problem below.
After typing -update all- I now have version 10.1 and the robust option runs
w/o any problem.
