As I suspected, -total- is very -svy- oriented. It does not call - 
summarize-; it calls _svy_summarize which calls _svy2, which calls a  
Mata function of the same name. So it is not a wrapper for - 
summarize-, and it is very heavily oriented toward listwise deletion.  
As others have suggested, calculating a VCE without listwise deletion  
would be a very strange exercise.
