I would be happier with a shared stance on thinking that Stata and R
(and much, much else) all have advantages and disadvantages, yet can
remain complementary, especially when R is free.
What could be less unconvincing to sceptics (or even skeptics) than a
thread on Statalist yielding a consensus that Stata is a very good
thing?
There's an alternative universe in which I am a total R freak (although
it's not this one). For that and other reasons, knocking R is poor
sport, and poor sportspersonship.

Just a heads up: in today's Times, there is an article about R.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/07/technology/business-computing/07progra
m.html?partner=rss&emc=rss
SAS is given specific mention, but not Stata.
I did a search of the archives for a thread comparing R and Stata, and
I didn't turn up much. I wonder if this article is a good occasion
for us to list all the pros of Stata over R. =)
