What you describe is not cross-classified; cross-classified
would be if one artist sold pictures in more than one year
- and you wanted -year- to be a classification.
However, with 30 artists and 25 years, you probably don't want
to treat year as a classification at all, but as a fixed effect.
Just pictures nested in artists.
hope this helps,
Jeph

dear list,
i have data for 1000 pictures (prices) nested in 30 artists over 25
years, but not every artist sold pictures each year - so i need to
specify a cross classified model, right?
is this syntax then correct?:
xtmixed price x1 x2 x3 || _all: R.year || artist:
THANKS,
martina
