Re: st: Re: do-file hygeine
Thanks! Didn't know about cmdlog; seems a good way to build do-files
without cut-and-paste!
You are welcome! I am very much a beginner myself in this area, and
I sincerely hope that Kit`s book will help me improve...
What I have learned, though, is that you must make sure you still
understand what you did half a year ago when that report comes back
where the referee says that you should really have included another
year in your panel. A good way to do that is to have your do-files
instruct Stata to keep both a-log-file, recording all screen output,
and a command log. From my experience, many users do not know about
-cmdlog-s, and if they do, they misunderstand the mechanism that
allows simultaneous -log-ging and -cmdlog-ging. The trick is that
there is a handle (the -name- option) which is distinct from the
-filename-...

Subject: st: do-file hygeine
Dear members of Statalist,
Using Stata has helped me realize an innate and compulsive need
for attention to detail. When it comes to good research practices
in general, I've learned good habits from my teachers and from
this paper:
Schreier AA, Wilson K, Resnik D. Academic research
record-keeping: best practices for individuals, group leaders,
and institutions. Acad Med 2006;81(1):42-7.
However, when it comes to Stata in particular, I'm feeling that
learning structured approaches from others would be useful. I'd
appreciate any pointers toward good do-file hygeine, i.e.
management practices to maximize good record keeping, with
resulting least likelihood of overlooking important details.
