If Steve or his email program introduces a space between any two
symbols of any Stata's commands or identifiers, the code will also
fail, but this is not an argument to switch to one-letter commands and
one-letter identifiers.

however Stata fails in the files with ; used as the line-terminator
and // in the first position in the line. So IMHO this is more
important to fix, then forbid using * as a comment marker.
