st: creating dummy variables out of categorical variables

Hello,
      I am trying to create dummy variables from a categorical variable that 
takes values from 1-9.Is there a quick and convenient way of doing this? My 
current option, which involves doing a series of "generate dummyi= 
(catvar==i)" seems tedious. Thanks.
