I don't think -set varabbrev- would matter because age is not an
abbreviation; it uniquely identifies the variable.
For example:
. clear
. set obs 1
obs was 0, now 1
. gen age =1
. gen agecat = 1
. set varabbrev on
. drop age
. ds
agecat
. clear
. set obs 1
obs was 0, now 1
. gen age =1
. gen agecat = 1
. set varabbrev off
. drop age
. ds
agecat
