Thank goodness! While I can easily imagine using a search-and-destroy text editor to replace all occurrences of 'strpos(' with 'index(' in every do-file on my machine, it's not safe to do this the other way around, and I wasn't looking forward to inspecting every occurrence of 'index(' before giving the go ahead to a replace.

I agree that strpos is far more user-readable, but for us old-timers (I realise I have my Stata 3 installation disks on the shelf) it will be hard to shake the index habit.
