indeed the gr command was wraped, leading to the error message.
the end product was not what i envisaged. i have now emailed scott privately
with an attachment of what i am hoping to accomplish. i will update the list
following scott's reply.

ps: i have done it this way as one of the statalist's rules forbids

I believe the first line of the -graph bar- statement has been
wrapped. The -label(labsize(*.65)))- statement needs to be on the
same line as -gr hbar-
