Presumably you don't want both a big and a little
label for any numbers, contrary to what you are asking 
for. Thus I would try 

xlabel(2(.5)4) xmlabel(2.1(.1)2.4 2.6(.1)2.9 <etc>) 

where <etc> is left as a small piece of fun.
