Excel (at least version 2003) does not expect a binary file. A tab-delimited text file with the suffix .xls is opened by Excel without problems. In fact, saving tab-delimited text files as .xls with -outsheet- is a convenient shortcut that makes it possible to open such files in Excel by double-clicking them in Windows Explorer. It is not necessary to start Excel first and then go to File - Open to run the import wizard.
