I don't think that is what was described at all -- it appears he is just
doing what the -adjust- command does, but manually, and is wondering if it
is an OK approach. I would just recommend using -adjust-.

If I understand you right, you're looking for a quicker way to mean-center
your independent variables.
If I am, then try Ben Jann's -center- routine, downloadable from SSC:
. findit center
and take it from there. Hope that helps.
