I agree with Matthew and Horea (and many others) on the lack of an
appropriate built-in "Number at Risk" table placed in the graph region.
The importance of having such information embedded in a Kaplan-Meier
survival curve is crucial (see, for example, Pocock, S. J., Clayton, T.
C., & Altman D.G. (2002). Survival plots of time-to-event outcomes in
clinical trials: good practice and pitfalls. Lancet, 359, 1686-1689.).
Of the other statistical software packages that have this capability SAS
is an example (I believe S-PLUS/R have a rather rudimentary way of
adding this information).
I am not sure how it can be done, but an idea would be to add an extra
invisible x-axis with labels indicating the numbers at risk underneath
the main x-axis.
I too was hoping to see this implemented in version 9 (perhaps, in place
of directional arrows...)
