It was reported that graph box fails when unabbrev is set off. This bug
also affects hbox (not surprisingly). It does not seem to affect bar or
hbar.
One of my recent routines was caught by this "feature" -- a user had
unabbrev turned off permanently and it failed for him. Turned out in
that case it was sloppy code that meant that as long as one had a
single variable beginning with 'd' in the data set it would work fine
(if abbreviations were allowed).
