Absolutely. Here students have access
to a particular drive. If I am supporting
their work and reach for a program not
installed, I just copy it across to their
own filespace. Often -ssc copy- is the most
practical way to copy a few files across from
SSC, so long as you know what they're called,
or even -copy-, so long as you know where they are.
FWIW, this gives students a _very_ strong sense
of the extensibility of Stata when they see
you do it.
In short, there's more than one way to do it,
so persevere until you find one.
