I'm not aware of the beginner listserve but I don't think that Statalist is
unfriendly to beginner questions -- especially ones that show that the
person has made some attempt to answer it on their own.  I just checked the
Statalist archives and found that your recollections are a little off.  I
see 4 questions posted by you in the past 2 months and 3 got replies,
sometimes several.  Questions on coding of missing values, reclassifying a
variable into percentages, and testing multiple differences for svymean all
got responses.  The one question without a response asked about 3 way
graphs.  From that question, I didn't have a clear idea what you meant (what
would this graph look like?), so I didn't respond.  I would guess that other
readers were similarly in the dark about what you wanted and so didn't reply
either.
