st: reshape

I am having a problem to reshape data.
When I do: reshape wide clave importe, i( nif ) j( clave ) string
Stata gives this mesage:
unrecognized command:  merge
r(199);
Do I need to have the same number of periods (in variable "clave" ) to use
reshape?
