Try running "update q" to see what the recommendation is. If you run
"version" and it says 8.0, that may be the problem. You have the 8.1 version
of codebook but an earlier version of the Stata executable, for example.

Subject: st: codebook broken
I am relatively new to Stata and just ran my first online update. The
CODEBOOK command now fails:
. codebook
version 8.1 not supported
r(9);
What am I missing?
