Scott Merryman <[email protected]> then provided a work around and Nick Cox 
<[email protected]> provided a few suggestions.

This does indeed appear to be a bug with the -xtdes- command.  We will look
into an alternative method of handling this and include the fix in a future
update to Stata.  We will be contacting West privately concerning this fix.
