Hello All

Thanks to Kit Baum, there is now a new version of the -sencode- package downloadable from SSC. Type -ssc desc sencode- to find out more.

The -sencode- package is a sequential non-alphanumeric version of -encode-, and encodes the values of a string variable to a numeric variable in a user-specified order, which, in default, is the sequential order of appearance of the string value in the data set. The new version fixes a bug, which caused the old version of -sencode- to fail if the -manyto1- option was specified and the string variable to be encoded contained a non-missing string value containing only spaces (eg " "). The new version of -sencode- encodes such a non-missing string of spaces to a non-missing numeric code, although the empty string value "" is still encoded to a numeric missing value. (This is consistent with the policy of -encode-, and indeed with the policy of the old version of -sencode- when the -manyto1- option was not specified.)

Best wishes

Roger
