I suppose, be we only feel the pressure to remain current because
StataCorp actually updates their software with tangibly useful gains. A
student can get a copy of Stata for a class, and use it happily for as
long as the hardware & OS keep supporting it (one really big reason to
have students learn stats with Stata).
Now... when Stata corp starts bringing out useless updates (like many of
the other BG updates), that'll be the day my questions start with "I'm
still using an old version of Stata....", and I make my way to Texas with
picket in hand.
