Community corner: Data Enchanted
Have you come up with creative ways to get your students excited about data analysis? Dr. Kathryn Bender, an economics professor at the University of Delaware, used Taylor Swift to inspire her popular workshop series, “Data Enchanted: Transforming Numbers into Knowledge”.
Dr. Bender created Data Enchanted to help her undergraduate students acquire experience with data management and visualization in Stata before taking econometrics and other courses that assume basic knowledge. It includes
- “Ready for It”, an introduction to Stata;
- “You Belong with Me”, building and structuring data for analysis; and
- “I Knew You Were Trouble”, transforming and cleaning data for analysis.
Students even pull data from Spotify to answer Swift-related research questions.
“I personally had no background in [Stata], but I found it very interesting just to open up and see some of the basic commands and functions it has to offer”, said Daniela Espada, a junior business analytics major.
