There is an updated version of the syntax highlighting at
https://code.google.com/p/notepad-stats-integration/
which appears to handle compound-double-quotes correctly.
The problem of treating all "*" characters as indicators for comments
persists. My imperfect workaround is to remove "*" as a comment
indicator and replace it with "**". The benefit is that now "*"
behaves properly for multiplication and pointers; the cost is that
lines intended to be comments beginning only with a single asterisk
will not be highlighted as comments, so you have to remember to use at
least two asterisks to indicate a comment or use // or /* */.
