There are limits to both the number of variables and the width of a dataset. These limits vary depending on which version of Stata you have.

Subject: st: Merge : no room to add more variables because of width
Dear all,
I have dataset one with 24 million observations, and dataset two with
14,000 observations (12 variables).
I need to do a m:1 merge
master data: dataset one
using : dataset two
my computer ram is 4g,
my merge resutls in an error message"
no room to add more variables because of width
An attempt was made to add a variable that would have increased the memory required to store an observation beyond what is currently possible.
should I split the data into 2 or 3 small pieces? could you please suggest an efficient way of doing this?
thanks,
Rochelle
