As a beginner, you would do well to consult an introductory Stata
programming manual such as Long 2009, esp. sec. 2.3, or Baum 2009, esp.
sec. 2.2.
Baum, C. F. (2009). An introduction to Stata programming. Stata Press
books.
Long, J. S. (2009). The workflow of data analysis using Stata. Stata
Press books.
These are available at http://www.stata.com/bookstore/stata-press-books,
or check your local library.
