Few if any data sets available over the Internet would be suitable to
research analysis as is, and nearly any data set would require data
management and defining the variables that suite your research
purposes. Just a disclaimer.
The major depositories of social science research data are ICPSR
(membership required, which major US universities do have;
http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/ICPSR/index.jsp) and IPUMS at Univ
of Minnesota (http://www.ipums.org; user profile required) -- this one
produces a plain text data file along with the do-file to read it and
create labels.
