Plugins for popular text editors (e.g. NotePad++) that get syntax
highlighting right and auto-update lists of commands.
(I am aware of the excellent - albeit IMO somewhat dated - advice at
http://fmwww.bc.edu/repec/bocode/t/textEditors.html and
http://huebler.blogspot.com/2008/04/stata.html, as well as the very
nice material for NP++ provided at
http://code.google.com/p/notepad-stats-integration/. However, having
tried many of these options, none seems to work as well as an official
plugin could (for example in handling compound double-quotes), and
installation is not 100% idiot-proof. Of course, I would be very happy
to be informed that I am wrong about this.)
Alternatively, adding some of the features of text editors to the
existing do-file editor: code completion, customizable shortcuts to
insert code chunks, permanent bookmarks, file comparison / diff, etc.
