Excellent advice. However, I would strongly suggest that you consider either Git (most popular, and with some penetration into the R community) or Mercurial (similar in functionality to Git, but some would argue that it is a bit easier to use), and that you start by using SourceTree (an excellent GUI client for both Git and Mercurial).
