I don't know how the two products came to be so wedded, but
Stat/Transfer always comes out with a new version when Stata does.
You do have to be careful in that sometimes things get lost or
modified in translation because the new format can't handle something
that Stata does. But any conversion routine will face that problem.

As a sidelight, I probably only use Stat/Transfer a few times a year,
but it is invaluable when I do.
