My guess is that your supervisor has a newer version of Stata than
you do. If so, tell him you can't be expected to work under such
inhumane conditions and demand that he get you an upgrade. Or at
least explain to him how much easier it is when everybody has the
same software.
Barring that, get him to use the -saveold- command for files he wants
you to work with. If you are going to frequently need to import data
saved in other formats, stat/transfer is a great purchase. You can
also download and install from SSC -use13-, which "allows users of
Stata 10-12 to load datasets created with Stata 13."
If you are both using the same version of Stata, then I don't know
what the problem is. Maybe the file is corrupted or maybe there is a
problem with your installation of Stata.

Hi,
I am currently trying to open a .dta file, which was created by
exporting the data from excel, using a stata software. The .dta file
was created on my supervisor's computer and opened fine in Stata on
his computer but I have not been able to open it on
other computers. I keep getting a error r(610) that the file is not
in stata format.
Furthermore, I've tried importing directly from excel but I am
unable to check the button for using the first row as variable names.
Could anyone please advise me on why the original data file is not
recognised as a stata file and how I could overcome the problem?
Also, how could I overcome the second issue of being able to read
the first row of the excel file into stata as variable
names?
Many thanks,
Ruchira.
