Mike asks how to adjust for inflation.
If you're interested in the U.S. ...
See http://www.bls.gov/cpi/ for all sorts of information on the
consumer price index.
In particular, see:
ftp://ftp.bls.gov/pub/special.requests/cpi/cpiai.txt
The third column from the right gives you the average annual CPI for
each year from 1913-2012.
To adjust to any particular base year, create a CPI ratio of the CPI
for the base year that of the unadjusted year. E.g. to adjust 2006
to 2010 dollars,
. local cpi_ratio 218.056/201.6
. gen adjusted = unadjusted*`cpi_ratio'
Hope this helps.
Dan
