Dr. Gallego can inspect the SPSS file with the free utility ViewSav (it
can be downloaded from http://www.asselberghs.dds.nl/stuff.htm ). It
lists all the variable names, labels, types, value labels, and also
produces summary tables (frequencies and descriptives).
I found it very useful when transferring files to Stata (using
-usespss-, BTW).

Dear Dr. Gallego,
thank you for notifying me about the issue! Based on the information
you provide -usespss- has failed to convert your SPSS file into Stata.
This could be because one of the following:
1) your file is damaged;
2) your file is in a new format, not known to -usespss-;
3) your file is in an old format, not known to -usespss-;
4) -usespss- has a bug, which prevents it from converting the file;
As for #2, -usespss- definitely does not know anything about the new
(as of SPSS 21) compressed files (extension should be zsav if I am not
mistaken, but I've never seen those files). If you have such a file I
can only confirm the incompatibility. This format was added in the
SPSS 21 which came out a few years after -usespss- was released.
As for #1, this can be excluded if there is an alternative tool, that
can correctly open the file. That can be SPSS itself, Stat\Transfer,
or something else. If an alternative tool also fails to convert the
file, then the problem is with the data file.
#3 is possible. There are some formats used by SPSS for DOS, and
mainframe versions of SPSS that are incompatible. I have an
alternative command for SPSS/PC (*.SYS) files, which is not released
yet, but is quite robust.
#4 is possible. A few bugs were already identified after the release
of -usespss-. A few patches are available.
To be sure I would like to request your data file. If this is not
possible due to confidentiality reasons, I would ask you to extract
the header of the datafile, basically the first few bytes. The
complication is that I don't know how many bytes (it depends on the
file) but we can work interactively on that. It is important to me and
other users to make sure -usespss- is free of bugs.
Alternatively, you can edit the _usespss.ado . It has the following line:
local level=0 // Warning: do not change this value unless
instructed to do so (Stata may crash, Worlds may collide, ...)
Try to set the level to a higher value (integer 0-99, and perhaps
100), and -usespss- will become more verbose about what it is doing at
the moment. Perhaps you will see something that would help us identify
the problem. If Stata crashes and closes when you try to convert the
file, then it might be not showing yet the most recent step at the
time it crashes.
To simplify the matters I suggest the following: our product ADePT
(worldbank.org/adept) contains the most recent version of -usespss-
inside with all known fixes applied. It is not useful for Stata, but
it would help in diagnosing the problem. I suggest you install ADePT
on any Windows machine of your choice (it doesn't have to be connected
to the internet, you can transfer adept_install.exe via USB if
necessary). Open "Poverty and Inequality" module, and click <Add> on
the main form, pick your data file and click OK. If the same problem
occurs as you describe with the released -usespss- you will have an
error message, and no file will be added to the list. If the problem
is already fixed, the file will be added to the list, and you can
inspect it's contents by clicking the <Browse> button. There are video
tutorials on the site in case you need guidance, but its all very
straightforward.
If it is possible to send the file, I'd prefer that option. You can
use my work email [email protected], this email address, or I
can arrange an FTP account for your upload.
Let me know how you want to proceed.
Sincerely,
Sergiy Radyakin

I tried to import an spss database into STATA using the usespss command and this is what I got:
"The exception unknown software exception (0x0eedfade) occurred in the application at location 0x7c812fd3"
Not sure what that means. Any advice? I have STATA 11 IC.
Thanks!
