Quite so. I didn't read your mail carefully enough.
bysort GroupID AnimalID Parity : gen level2 = _n == 1
by GroupID : replace level2 = sum(level2)
Optimistic numbering scheme allows for just under one trillion animals
in Switzerland. You would need to use the lakes and glaciers too....
