Yes, Jeph, you are correct: versions, not platforms.
It was created using R's "foreign" package

I think you mean different versions, not different platforms?
I have run into similar problems (Stata files with mysterious properties) when using Stat/Transfer to create them. I
take it this file was not originally created in Stata?
